The same line of strong storms that turned deadly in the south on Easter Sunday will move through the southeast and northeast today bringing severe weather, especially damaging winds, and the potential for power outages and isolated tornadoes; plus, more of today’s weather news and forecast.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued weather-related warnings and watches for at least 11 states on Monday including northern Florida, eastern Georgia, eastern South Carolina, eastern North Carolina, eastern Virginia, eastern West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, eastern Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey.
The risks included in today’s severe weather outbreak are heavy rain, flash flooding, damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes.
The same line of storms expected to hammer the southeast and northeast today are those that left at least 18 people dead in the south on Easter Sunday, as well as destroyed hundreds of buildings in several states.
The hardest hit states on Sunday were Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Louisiana’s governor declared a state of emergency.
Officials across the East Coast were already warning in advance that severe weather in the area on Monday could bring power outages and thousands are already without power in New Jersey due to strong winds.
Sustained winds between 35-45 miles per hour are expected, while wind gusts in the range of 50-60 miles per hour are anticipated. Some areas could see gusts exceeding 70 mph.
As of Monday morning, over 1 million people in more than a dozen southern states were without power in the aftermath of Easter Sunday’s storms.
