Heatwave Pushes Northeast Firing up Severe Thunderstorms

July’s heatwave will push East and North today, firing up severe thunderstorms over the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic, while extreme heat continues over the central US bringing severe weather… Today’s forecast.

Dangerous heat moves east and north

A dangerous level of heat continues today, particularly over the central US and parts of the South, as at least 46 percent of the country will see temperatures soar over 90 degrees today, while the heat index will be higher in many areas. The heatwave that has been plaguing the west and southern latitudes will move toward the northeast today.

Excessive heat will continue in the nation’s midsection and extend through the weekend. The South will see more hot and humid conditions.

Heat warnings by the National Weather Service:

Excessive heat warnings: south-central California and western Nevada.

Heat advisories: eastern Texas, eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Louisiana, northern and central Mississippi, eastern Tennessee and eastern Alabama.

Severe thunderstorms in central US, Northeast

There will be scattered thunderstorms around the nation on Thursday, with most of the activity in the East. Thunderstorms will be present over portions of the Southwest, central US, South, Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

Severe weather on 2 fronts

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the central US and Northeast.

Central US: over the northeastern corner of Colorado through southwestern and central Nebraska.

Northeast: over eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, western Pennsylvania and southwestern New York.
