Hot and Windy in the West Increasing Fire Danger, Freeze Over Northeast


Tropical Storm Sally has moved into the Atlantic, a cold front brings a freeze to the Northeast, while hot and windy conditions in the west have triggered red flag warnings and air quality alerts in at least 9 states for Friday.

Parts of the west will see hot and windy conditions today which will move the smoke from wildfires eastward, but also make conditions favorable in fanning the flames of existing wildfires. Rain is expected over portions of the Northeast which could assist firefighting efforts there.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued red flag warnings for at least nine states, and air quality alerts for at least nine states in the west on Friday. Air quality will be hazardous for the entirety of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, as well as most of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado today.

Red flag warnings: northeastern, east-central and southeastern California; western, central and southern Nevada; northwestern Arizona; Utah; southwestern Idaho; eastern Oregon; southwestern Montana; southeastern Wyoming; western Nebraska.

Air quality alert: Washington; Oregon; Idaho; western, central and southeastern and western Montana; western South Dakota; western, central and northeastern Wyoming; western Nebraska; central, north-central and eastern Colorado; south-central and southern California; northern and northwestern Nevada.

Northern latitudes saw frost and freeze warnings overnight, similar conditions forecast for Saturday

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued frost and freeze warnings for portions of the north-central US, Ohio Valley, and northeast overnight. Similar conditions are forecast for Saturday, particularly for the Northeast and parts of the Northwest and the northern Rockies.

Freeze warnings were issued in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, and Maine. Frost advisories were issued in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine.
