Where there is a will, there is a way. Millions of people around the world bet every year on the outcome of sports. From small bets, like shaving facial hair or wearing silly clothes, to thousands of dollars on how many times a ball is fumbled, sports betting is big business.

But in 2020, the world of sports is basically over. So what do all the sports nuts bet on and do when they don’t have a serious game to watch? Well, the weather, of course. Yes, we’re completely serious – weather betting is a thing, and you can get in on the action.

What Weather Betting Entails

The online sportsbook Bovada, a huge name for online betting, was obviously concerned at first because without sports, do they have a site? Then someone got a genius idea. What will always be around, never be certain, and will have plenty of odds? Why, weather, of course!

Thus, they put up daily odds on the weather in a variety of places around the world. If you’re interested, most major US cities are listed, and you can place a variety of bets, including the OVER/UNDER based on the expected daily minimum or maximum temperature.

It Works Just Like Sports Betting

The whole system works just like sports betting. The site lets you look at the odds, and if you win your bet, your payout will be based on what others also thing.

As an example, at the end of March, the site was taking bets on what the minimum temperature would be in Houston, Texas on March 26. Over 68 degrees had -215 odds, while the under had +160.

You can also bet on things from other sites; it’s not just Bovada getting in on it. From beating record temperatures in areas to highest wind gusts, total rainfall in an area, and more.

How the Weather Landscape Is Changing

With more of the workforce home, serious weather is having less of an impact. A tornado in Arkansas in March took out a whole shopping mall in the middle of what normally would have been a busy day… but because of social distancing and stay at home orders, no one was even injured.

The whole way we look at weather and the forecast is now changing, and will continue to change. If major sports don’t see a comeback this year, weather betting is expected to get even bigger. After all, people need something to do!
