Widespread Thunderstorms, Multiple Severe Weather and Flooding Threats


Thunderstorms will stretch from East to West and from North to South on Thursday, bringing two separate severe weather threats, as well as three separate areas of potential flash flooding affecting 25 states.

Severe weather warnings in Northwest and Northeast

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued severe thunderstorm warnings on two separate fronts in the West and East that could bring severe weather to 11 states on Thursday.

Northwest: eastern Montana and western North Dakota.

Northeast: along the coastal and inland areas over portions of northern New Jersey; eastern Pennsylvania, southeastern and eastern New York; Connecticut; Rhode Island; Massachusetts; southern Vermont; southern New Hampshire; southern Maine.

Flash flooding risk in over a dozen states

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for potential flash flooding to at least 13 states on Thursday.

Southwest: southern, south-central and southeastern Arizona, as well as south-central and southwestern New Mexico.

Gulf Coast: along the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Mid-South and Southeast: northwestern South Carolina, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, eastern Kentucky, western and northwestern Virginia, eastern West Virginia and southern Delaware.

Tropical storm alert in the Gulf

The National Weather Service (NWS) announced that Tropical depression #8 has formed in the central Gulf and could become a tropical storm before making landfall along the coast of Texas on Saturday. The system is forecast to become a weak tropical storm over the next day or two and be dubbed Hanna.

As of 8 AM ET, the storm was about 405 miles east-southeast of Port O’Connor, Texas, with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph as it moves to the west-northwest at 9 mph, Fox News reported.

The NWS has issued the following tropical storm watches and warnings:

Tropical storm watch: Corpus Christi, Victoria and Laredo Texas;

Tropical storm warning: North-central Gulf of Mexico.

Excessive heat warning: northeastern North Dakota; northwestern and southern Minnesota; Arkansas.

Heat advisory: Northern and northeastern South Dakota; central Nebraska; eastern, central and northeastern North Carolina; northern, southeastern and eastern Virginia; eastern West Virginia; central and southern Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Delaware; New Jersey; southeastern Pennsylvania; New York City and surrounding areas; southern Connecticut.
